Beartooth Highway (Wyoming, Montana)

Providing visitors access to Yellowstone Park's northeast entrance, the Beartooth Highway makes its way across the rugged Beartooth Mountain Range in Montana and Wyoming. Devils Tower National Monument - Devils Tower, WY
Devils Tower  Devils Tower rises 1267 feet above the Belle Fourche River. Once hidden, erosion has revealed Devils Tower. This 1347 acre park is covered with pine forests, woodlands, and grasslands. Deer, prairie dogs, and other wildlife are seen. Also known as Bears Lodge, it is a sacred site for many American Indians. President Theodore Roosevelt proclaimed Devils Tower the first national monument in 1906.

Fort Laramie National Historic Site - Southeast Wyoming, WY
Fort Laramie National Historic Site  This "grand old post," established as a private fur trading fort in 1834, witnessed the entire sweeping saga of America's western expansion and Indian resistance to encroachment on their territories. Indians, trappers, traders, missionaries, emigrants, gold seekers, soldiers, cowboys and homesteaders would leave their mark on a place that would become famous in the American West. more... Fossil Butte National Monument - Kemmerer, WY

Fossilized fish, insects, plants, reptiles, birds, and mammals are exceptional for their abundance, variety, and detail of preservation.  Most remarkable is the story they tell of ancient life in a sub-tropical landscape. Mormon Pioneer National Historic Trail - Various States, IL,IA,NE,UT,WY
Warm Springs Campsite near Guernsey, WY  Led by Brigham Young, roughly 70,000 Mormons traveled along the Mormon Trail from 1846 to 1869 in order to escape religious persecution. The Pioneer Company of 1846-1847 established a route from Nauvoo, Illinois, to Salt Lake City, Utah, covering about 1,300 miles that would include construction of new ferries and bridges, and the placement of markers for others to follow.

One of several outbuildings still standing at the old Pacific Springs stage station near South Pass, WY  As the harbinger of America's westward expansion, the Oregon Trail was the pathway to the Pacific for fur traders, gold seekers, missionaries and others. Pony Express National Historic Trail - Various States, CA,CO,KS,MO,NE,NV,UT,WY
The Old Freighter's Museum in Nebraska City was headquarters for Russell, Majors, & Waddell - founders of the Pony Express.  The Pony Express NHT was used by young men on fast horses to carry the nation's mail from Missouri to California in the unprecedented time of only ten days. The relay system became the nation's most direct and practical means of east-west communications before the telegraph, and it played a vital role in aligning California with the Union in the years just before the Civil War.  See multistate section (Coming Soon)

Yellowstone National Park - Yellowstone National Park, ID,MT,WY
The brilliant colors of a hot spring at Mammoth Terraces.  Established in 1872, Yellowstone National Park is America's first national park. Located in Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho, it is home to a large variety of wildlife including grizzly bears, wolves, bison, and elk. Preserved within Yellowstone National Park are Old Faithful and a collection of the world's most extraordinary geysers and hot springs, and the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone.
